ABOUT SALSA

There is a lot of speculation as to the history of Salsa, but one theory is that
it originated in Cuba and Columbia, being diluted as it moved through North
America to places like New York.

|
|
|
Two theories are that it started in the 70’s to create an umbrella for
grouping Afro-Latin rhythms and that it was also used as a marketing tool.

Many types of music have influenced Salsa dancing. Cuba has many French and Spanish
inhabitants, including many African slaves who were taken there resulting in
a rich fusion of many different cultures.

There are step variations in counting. We count 123 567 where the beats 4 and
8 are transfers of weight, pauses or rests. Salsa can also be taught starting
on the count of 2 which makes the appearance of the dance completely different.

There are many types of Salsa, each with its own flavour of interpretation. Salsa
Sensation teach the "New York" style which is based on the Cross-body-lead
technique.
